Sydänlanka ('Heartwire') is a fresh North Karelian association that inspires habitants in the provinces to take care and enjoy the abundance of the natural environment, share community and to strengthen the connection with nature.

Active members of Sydänlanka organize workshops, excursions, cultural events, sharing circles, community workshops and spending time together, caring, sharing and rooting as a collective.

We organize activities according to the natural cycle, listening to people's strengths and valuing their resources. Everyone can suggest an event or create a circle about an exciting subject or activity.

Events are affordable. The majority of events are free of charge for members. You can come as you are and become acquainted with the activity, on a trial basis, before to decide whether to sign up as a member.

One of the most powerful resources is the dreams of people. We encourage you to dream, visualize, be creative, play, and strengthen the connection with yourself and the area that surrounds you.

People gather together to dream, envision and explore their intuitiveness collectively. This includes; dance jams, excursions, gathering around the campfire or in the heat of sauna. In such happenings, insightfulness and positive intentions have arisen.

An important part of activity is the gathering and preservation of natural resources; wild food, berries, herbs etc. It is easier to participate in a gathering workshop than to try collect and store everything alone. With a few hours of collaboration, it is possible to preserve a large amount of nutrition for your own needs and for sharing with your loved ones.

We come together for the construction of a greenhouse as well as creating a vegetable garden, everything is created together in a harmonious manner. Such are the community workshops!

In addition, we organize workshops for the production of organic commodities such as soap, salvas, beeswax candles etc.

ACTION REPORT

Sydänlanka was founded at the end of 2016 after many years of rewarding grass roots activity and a few inspiring brainstorming sessions in the communities ice swimming sauna place in Rääkkylä.

In the beginning, visionary circles were held, a cosmic winter trip was directed to the stone age habitations of Central Karelia, an art class was held for children and many ground-breaking workshops were arranged such as vegetable fermentation and tincture making.

In spring 2017 a prominent Finnish singer and musician, Ismo Alanko, performed in Kitee, of North Karelia. Sydänlanka was honored to call this great Finnish interpreter of emotions to perform in the artists' own home region. The concert was a success and was followed by a range of performances by popular Finnish musicians playing at the Kitee Hall.

At the same time, two members of the Sydänlanka participated in the international Redrawing the Economy Workshop in Tampere and spread the joy of nature and collective thinking.

In summer 2017, Sydänlanka organized a series of activities, at the Botanical Gardens of Joensuu (Botania) in co-operation with the cultural collective Boheemi.

Here we organized music festivals, wild food workshops, didgeridoo workshops, pop up restaurants, fermentor’s clubs and a vast array of natural garden recourse courses, which were financed by the City of Joensuu's KAKE project (funded by the European Union, the City of Joensuu and the ELY Center of Southern Savonia).

The outdoor garden of Botania, served as a free meeting point for citizens and provided a vegetable garden for workshops. Sydänlanka also raised funds by selling seedlings, which was only made possible by Botania administering their facilities.

The association’s activities are also arranged in members' homes and gardens, in forests and hiking destinations, in the comfort of a cozy cafe or a local community hall.

All in all, in year 2017, Sydänlanka people did a great job of producing nourishment, storing herbs, vegetables and wild food directly for their own use as well as neighbors and friends. Also communal food events were organized under the name of Karhun keittiö (The Bear's Kitchen).

In spring 2018 Sydänlanka organized a community workshop for the construction of a greenhouse and several fermentor’s clubs were held. Similar activities have also taken place in previous years, when members of the association have come together to build greenhouses and to refurbish old habitats for residential use.

In the beginning of 2018 we also learned the traditional bread baking with sour dough and awaited impatiently for the wild food forage season.
